  • 50 is enough for plants with only one or two non-bred-only variants. But with more, it is not enough. The next one will be Dandelion, which has three parentless variants (not sure how to call it but...anyway.) and one potential bred-only variant. So it is likely that I will increase the amount by 20.

However you are right at some point. I checked the wiki list and found that we don't have many species with more than 2 parentless variants. So 50 will still be sufficient for the rest of the experiments, not counting the Rose.

  • I'm running out of MacBeth/witch-related comments. Probably to everone's big relief. So, without much further ado about nothing:

    Shelybear:
How about skipping the Dandelion for the moment, and finishing the plants with less parentless versions first ? That way we can verify the easier things before starting those experiments that will take more samples and time. The "Flaming Katy" could be tested with 50 samples. After that we could move to the Hyacinth, that will need more samples, because there are 2 parentless versions (75, maybe, so 50% more ?)
And then... Well, if it is true that you can get a parentless Biting Dandelion from the Post Pixie, it wouldn't be possible to accept parentless samples that grew up before the experiment starts, because of the risk of people not remembering where they got theirs (Wild Garden or Pixie). Participants would even have to be careful/watchful during the experiment, due to the way that parentless pixie seed is acquired.
Because of that, I'd recommend doing the Rose before the Dandelion. There may be lots of parentless versions (6, right ?), requiring a much bigger sample base, but at least here we could use plants that grew up sometime before the experiment, as we did with the Christmas Rose and could do with the Flaming Katy and the Hyacinth as well.

(Of course, the use of older samples is based on the assumption that the suspected "breed only" variants weren't released significantly later than the parentless ones, that goes for the Christmas Rose as well as for anything else. Could anyone who has been around for some of those releases confirm or negate that ?)

  • With the rose, both bred-only variants came out at the same time as the others. In fact, I think that might have been the first flower that had two bred-only variants right off the bat, which caused a bit of confusion at first. Those two variants can be extremely tricky to get, too - there are so many variants, that you can breed for quite a while before you get the variant that you're waiting for.

Most plants that have a bred-only variant started out with them, but a few were added later. It's hard to remember which ones they were, but there are a few that I remember for certain where all variants came out together: hyacinth, fuchsia, flaming katy, and grape hyacinth were all released at once, I believe. (Note that the flaming katy has two bred-only variants, and only one parentless variant, which is, I think, a departure from most of our other plants.)

Holiday plants, however, are MUCH trickier. For instance, the bunnies weren't even breedable until last year (I think it was last year), so the fact that there are bred-only variants, I don't know if that means we were unable to get those at all other than during their release year (which I think MIGHT be the case), or if that was simply changed later.

Sure. We'll do the Flaming Katy for 50 specimen then Hyacinth for 75 specimen, both count existing plants. I'm not sure if everyone is interested in doing Rose because it requires large amount of example (I haven't decided how many will need, either) plus I think I already knew the result unless they change it recently. But also because it has many parentless variants I personally would like to, anyway. And yes, for Dandelion only seeds/sprouts after the start of experiment will be accepted.

Oh really? I didn't know bunnies weren't breedable before. By the time I joined they were able to be bred. But I think since they are breedable now, yes it has some bred-only variants and are obtainable as well, according to what Exterminans mentioned earlier in this thread.

P.S. I'm considering, should I add experiment title into the thread title so people can know which one is in progress?

  • And another one:

With the two that are still kettles this leaves me three chances to finally get the parentless blue mushroom that I'm still missing. (Got three parentless Purples and four Hats, one Red, one Snail, but no Blue one. I mean, the Hats are my favourite, but still... Wanted to collect at least one of each variant by myself. And out of 12 grown mushrooms having 10 that belong to only two varieties is kind of boring...)

    Shelybear:
Adding the current plant into the title sounds nice - but would it fit in there ?

  • I won't wish you luck, because you will do well, and won't need luck. :) But do well, I know you can! (I will wish you luck, that the professors will put reasonable questions on the exams, however! I know what it's like when professors ask stupid things on exams!)

  • No more breeding, but still plenty of brooms in the wild garden. So I'll try for some more non-Purple-non-Hats.

  • @ChevalierDeLis Added. Thanks!

@MiaSkywalker Thank you! And, professor didn't give ridiculous questions to us :) Yes I met some stupid questions before and the time I saw the 'correct answers' I was like 'What?! Are you kidding?!'
Anyway, I just handed-in the most tough one today (yeah!) and there will be only one more unseen exam to go.

Considering wild mushrooms are still around, I'm not going to end the experiment now. Anyone would like to start the new one? They can run in parallel. :)
