EDIT: Also, please don't mind me, but wouldn't using already existing adults, 'water' the result somehow? Because of course there are already lots and lots of a certain version out there - distributed over a considerate amount of time. Isn't it more helpful to do those tests with fresh plants and within a certain timeframe? ^^" But those are just my 5 cents of thought. Hit me with a broomstick if you like. xD

That was what she did with the first plant, but she seemed to be accepting adults this time. I tend to agree - it takes a bit longer, but if I may tender a suggestion, I would suggest that after this run we go back to only using new seeds.

  • On the other hand...
For "regular" plants there shouldn't be a way to get parentless versions outside of the wild garden, right ? So I think it would be allright to accept grown up ones as well. (That should usually lead to specimens from a broad timeframe, because members picked them up over time.) Sure, there are lots and lots of a certain version out there, but on the other hand if anyone had a parentless version of a suspected "breed only" thing, the experiment would come to a conclusion right then and there. And statistically, if the thing wasn't breed only, someone should have gotten a perentless one over time. So the experiment should still be as valid when accepting older plants. (Assuming, as we do, that these things aren't changed over time. Which would make the whole thing superfluous anyway.)

With "special" plants it's another story, because they are sometimes handed out parentless without coming from the wild garden. (Like the bunnies at easter.) Those would need a "wild garden seeds only" strategy.

  • Hm... that's a good point. I think Shely had originally been thinking of doing this for one of the holiday plants, then realized it was too late for that. That's probably why the original specification.

That said, if a variant ever changed from wild to bred-only, we could have a problem. I don't think that has ever happened, though. A few times a bred-only variant has come out for an older flower, but it's always been a new variant, never a change to a pre-existing variant.

We COULD go with the idea that for holiday plants they MUST be new plants, that way we can be sure they're from the garden. For non-holiday, it's up to Shely to decide what she'd prefer to do.

My Garden - My Dragon Cave Scroll

  • Uhm good question. I don't remember where exactly did I come out this idea - maybe I was wondering the bred-only rules for special plants, or I was just looking through Wiki page for regular plants.

Actually the reason I started to accept the already grown ones might be simpler than you imagined... One day I had a chat about this experiment with Exterminans, he said 'I don't know why don't you use existing plants'. So...here it is. I did worried about possible changes in rules and that was the reason I only took new plants at first run. As it's been confirmed that no rules have ever been changed (so far) to regular plants, it's safe to accept grown plants now. (A little bit extended: if one day the admin decided to change the rules after we figured them out, I'd be interested in trying to find out which variants are the new bred-only ones :))

And for the concerns, "grown plants spread over a broader timescale and it is more representative " is indeed a very strong argument. xD Although I know as there ARE many grown plants, it is way too easy to fill the 50 goals of parentless plants. Therefore run directly into the conclusion and say "that variant is bred-only" is a little bit inaccurate and hasty. So based on the huge amount of already grown plants, the only concern I'd have is that 50 specimen might not be enough to verify the hypotheses. And for sure, only 50 specimen is not even enough to conclude when we'are doing the ones which have more parentless variants.

Yes, I will definitely go with the above idea for special/event plants. However, for regular plants, I'd really like to let you choose the way you want to participant in. As I'm not in rush and this experiment is, initially, intended to bring something fun. I'd rather say it's a "game". So I can do "keep accepting grown plants, but increase (possibly double) the required amount", or "accept only newly-planted specimen". Either way, the total amount of plants vary according to the species of plants.

Or, is there any better suggestion??

(P.S. Haven't done such a long paragraph for long time apart from essays. xDD)
P.P.S. Samples added. Thank you Belisar, also for bringing this discussion. :)

  • Of course, if one rare colour is to be found parentless in someone's garden then the experiment is over. BUT that person who has it must be active in the forums or read this thread to make anyone aware of it. If you can 'see' for yourself how the new 50 plants grow and then don't spot a different colour, you are more easily to be convinced - at least I am xD. Posting lots and lots of old plants takes away the chance to spot a colourfreak.

I think if the number of freshly adoped specimen is higher than just the digged out old plants, the experiment will still leave a good feeling. Also an increase in general would be great then. :)

For the next one you could try for a different number and we'll see how it works - whether it is hard to get together the guineapigs or the table fills quickly enough. :3

But I am fine with anything. I still need lots of plants and colours so this is a good way to hunt with a system. xD I like this idea. :3

  • Might I make a suggestion, Shelybear? Since LN is going to be doing the Witch Mushrooms in her bred-only experiments, why don't you make your next experiment also be Witch Mushrooms? That way we can participate in both - any bred seeds we do we can post on LN's thread, and any wild seeds we take we can post on this thread. That is, if you want verification that the green and pink are bred-only. (Although I think one of the admins actually came out and told us on these, a few years back.)

Since these are holiday plants, we would definitely want to use new seeds only. I don't think we get post pixie seeds anymore (no one much liked how we had to get them in the past - we had to sacrifice a current witch mushroom in order to get the post pixie seed), but who knows? In case we do, we need to be aware which seeds we get from the garden itself, and which seeds we get from the post pixie.

  • Sorry for the wait. Yep since the event has been triggered on, we can do one for it now. So just post the parentless witch mushroom here and bred ones in LN's thread. xD

Since I also think it's been somehow verified, I'll take this one as an extra experiment. That means, this time I won't set a goal number. The experiment runs as long as the event is still running and ends when it is end :)

    Here we go.
