Is anyone else planning to watch? My country's in today's semi-final, so I'm definitely watching.

Absolutely! Gonna meet some friends, and we'll probably head to one of the pubs with a large TV screen.
The music is usually pretty awful, but the event is so much fun. Vive l'Europe! -
I agree!
There's hardly something better, than make fun of the music and artists (in a kind and harmless way of course) and to bet how many points the former russian countries will give each other....
Well i guess they'll spare the Ukraine this time....if they do participate at all.
Uhmm, i'm from Germany, so i guess we'll end up at place 18+ something. And i have to say, i'm not to fond of the german song myself.
I really liked last years winner though... -
Totally! I like Latvia (or Litvania...), the Cake to Bake one))
-
Whoo! It started!
I'm watching (or more listening) on my computer because I have projects to finish. -
The good thing about this event is that there is something for everybody. For me, it's the Eurovision skit from 1987 by Hape Kerkeling. "And here arrre zee results of ze bavarian jury: no points for anybody! Koan oanzign Punkt für so an Schmarrn!"
I hope a song wins that has lyrics in the country's native language. A little more diversity on the radio...

I remember the days when singing in one's native language was a prerequisite for the song contest. Huh. Not too many countries do that anymore, but you can always count on the French.
I thought the first semi was fun - wind machines, roller blades, various circus props and even a giant hamster wheel, woohoo! Oh, and a new contender for the highest hair, LOL! My favourites were the Dutch country duo and the punks from Iceland. Very sorry that "Cake to Bake" and the Portuguese entry didn't make it.

Wow, I have never heard of this - will have to search for it online - unless someone has a good link for me?
-
As a general introduction, this is quite good: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest

The second semi is tonight, and the final will be on Saturday. Youtube clips are usually up fairly quickly. It's mostly a European event (with a fairly generous interpretation of "Europe", including e.g. Morocco, Israel and Azerbaidjan ), but I heard from friends in Australia that many people follow it there as well.
-
You can also watch the event live on the official site.
Eurovision's pretty big in Australia, they even have their own voting (though they actually don't give points) and this year they're doing the interval act.But Eurovision is magnificent, you never know what will come on stage next. I don't think there's any musical style left that hasn't been represented.
-
Very interesting! And this is just the first time I've heard of it - which wouldn't surprise me except that I've been on the Internet since 2003, so I think I might have heard about it before now, you know?
-
Well, I never would have believed that our Conchita Wurst would win the song contest.
The last (and first) time Austria won was in 1966 by Udo Jürgens.Recent contributions to the contest by Austria were rather embarrassing.
-
What a night! Great show, great performances, and well done, Austria! I thought Conchita was great, but I wouldn't have expected her to win so many votes from all across Europe (well done, Europe! ). I'm also happy that the Dutch came in second, I really like that song. Sorry about the French getting no support at all, I thought their act was fun.
-
I'm not a fan of the ESC music, but we usually watch and Conchita was simply great. I'd never have believed she would win. Seems it was a pretty clear message...and the song is fantastic. *g*
-
Am I the only one who wasn't surprised at Conchita winning? I mean we had Dana win already and Verka nearly doing so. But it was a good song, I liked it. I liked Denmark and Iceland a bit more, but I'm not disappointed.
-
Went and watched(or listened, more precisely) some via the official website. Yeah it is the first time I've heard of it but no surprise:)
Is that a rule claiming that all songs must be in English? There were quite a lot countries participated in but (at least) I haven't heard one was not in English. I did looked forward to hear some other languages:pOkay heard some in other languages later.^ ^ -
Its a tendency that most songs are in English so most people understand what is sung. The French are always singing in French , though.*g*.
-
There was a rule once that you had to sing in your country's language, but they dropped it a while ago. Now, almost everyone sings English...
-
I wish they still had that rule, i love hearing the different languages.
I just checked and all the winning songs since 1992 have been in English, the only exception being 2007 which was in Serbian). Though there's been plenty of songs that've made it into top 10 that are non-English. -
A Canadian singer, who only sang in French won in 1988, that singer was Celine Dion, she now sings in English, but on Eurovision she sang in French and won btw ^,^
