• In addition to what was posted on that other post, Deutsche Welle (the German TV company) has a German course for free online. If you want to buy a course, but don't want the expense of the yellow-box language courses, there's an online course that is cheaper called Rocket German. The most important thing is finding someone to speak German with. My great-grandfather spoke German, so I learnt from him until he died when I was 7. I tried to use some books to brush up in my 30's, but had no one to speak with. I kept up my skills until then mostly because I knew German speakers in my hometown--I went to high school with 3 German-speaking kids, and my Girl Scout leader was from Germany. I'm 52 now and my German skills are very rudimentary. I remember my 7-year-old German better than my grown-up German. :)
