There is a german word "Glückspilz" - literally translated to Lucky Mushroom, meaning - I think - the same as Lucky dog. And it indeed refers to the Fly agaric. Why that is so seems not wholly clear, but it is suggested that it might be becqause the fly agaric is a magic mushroom, having been used in holy or magic ceremonies of eg. sibirean tribes. And of course it looks very attractively

That's very probable and possibly the term 'magic' comes from the hallucinations it gives.

Not so lucky.

Yes, I know that^^ But after all every lucky symbol - shamrock, horse shoe, whatsoever - is a piece of supersticion and not very rational *gg*

Oh but absolutely lucky. If you survive, that is. -
I knew about the horseshoe and chimney sweep, but those are both recognized as good luck charms here in the U.S. (the sweeps largely because of Mary Poppins and "Chim Chim Cheree"). I knew about the mushroom, too, but not that it was a particular species of mushroom. Opa passed away when I was 7, so much of my German traditional knowledge (and language skills, for that matter) are on the second-grade level.
I, also, was thinking that the fly agaric mushroom would make you feel lucky to survive eating it. Kelandra beat me to the punch, though. -
You shouldn't eat the fly agaric! It's the same as you wouldn't eat a horseshoe.
